SETTING YOUR DAY UP FOR SUCCESS FROM THE GET GO

When I was younger, I couldn’t have cared less about having a structured morning routine.

I popped out of bed at the last possible moment and drifted wherever my day might take me.

Nothing ever got done, and I found myself floating mindlessly through life.

One day I realized I wasn’t exactly where I wished to be, and I was the only thing holding myself back.

So, I began to do research on productivity and how to rewire my way of thinking. It wasn’t easy, but after a while, I noticed a subtle shift in my mindset.

One of the changes that seemed to have the most significant impact on my productivity was implementing a steady morning routine.

HOW MORNING ROUTINES WILL TAKE YOUR DAY TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Having a good morning routine sets the tone for the rest of your day.

Have you ever noticed that when you start the day off by vegetating on the couch and watching TV, it seems to be harder to motivate yourself the rest of the day?

I know it is for me. If I start my day by lounging about, all productivity completely goes out the window, leaving me disappointed and a little cabin fevery by the end of the day.

Some of the many benefits of creating and implementing a healthy morning routine include:

  • Increases productivity
  • Boosts mood
  • Gives a sense of accomplishment
  • Aids in better management of time
  • Aids in keeping motivation

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

-Howard Thurman

THE PERFECT CHECKLIST FOR A MORE PRODUCTIVE MORNING

There are so many options when it comes to crafting your perfect morning schedule.

Here are a few of the things I like to include to optimize my mornings and help keep myself on track.

1. NEVER HIT SNOOZE

Did you know that when you hit the snooze button and allow yourself to drift back off for five minutes, you are doing your body more harm than good?

By continuing to doze off, you are allowing your brain to start a new REM cycle, which it will be unable to finish.

By allowing your brain to release more melatonin as you snooze for a few more minutes, you will have created a fog which you will have to battle for the first few hours of your day.

So get up the first time!

I find that plugging my phone across the room at night is a great motivator to get me out of bed the first time.

Also, be sure to get a good night’s rest, to make each morning easier! Now, I know this is easier said than done.

If you are struggling with your nightly routine, be sure to check out my article on Creating A Good Evening Routine.

2. RESIST REACHING FOR A SCREEN

It is so easy to get lost in the neverending notifications that have piled up through the night.

One of the worst things you can do to derail your morning is to get lost in social media.

This is why you should refrain from going through your device for at least the first hour or two of your morning if you are able.

All the notifications and problems can wait!

3. MAKE YOUR BED

I know it sounds silly, and you probably hear it all the time, but making your bed each morning really does make a difference!

Making your bed is such a small task that can easily be accomplished each morning and aid in keeping you in the proper headspace for success.

4. ALWAYS HAVE A PLAN

A day unplanned is a day easily wasted, which is why it is essential to start each day with a map for success.

Creating a checklist is the best way for me to stay on track throughout the day.

So, determine your priorities, use a notebook, scribble it all out the night before, so upon waking, you are ready to go!

This way, there is no guessing. You already have your clear guide!

5. MEDITATE/STRETCH

Mediating first thing in the morning can do wonders for your mood.

I find that pairing meditation with reciting my morning affirmations does very well.

Set aside a few minutes to stretch and ponder your goals. Not only will your body thank you, but also your mind.

6. JOURNAL

Even if it’s for 5 minutes or less, journaling can do wonders on your mindset for the day.

My favorite practice is jotting down the things I’m grateful for, or the things I expect from this day.

7. LISTEN TO A MOTIVATIONAL AUDIOBOOK OR PODCAST

Listening to content, you find inspiring first thing in the morning is an excellent way to place yourself in a productive mindset and calm anxiety.

8. FUEL YOUR BODY WITH A HEALTHY BREAKFAST

Putting healthy foods into our bodies is one of the best ways to aid with productivity. Food is fuel, and it is crucial to fuel our bodies for the long haul!

Also, don’t forget to hydrate!

9. GET READY FOR THE DAY

Getting ready for the day and practicing self-care is essential even when we might be sitting home all day.

Getting ready for the day boosts our self-esteem and helps us be prepared for any surprise ventures that may come our way throughout the day.

So spend some time on yourself! Maybe do a face mask, or deep condition your hair! Whatever helps you feel rejuvenated.

10. EAT THE FROG

If you are new to the personal development world, you are probably hearing this phrase for the first time.

“Eating the frog” essentially means, to take on the worst task, or the job you are dreading the most first.

The phrase “eating the frog” originates from an old Mark Twain quote.

“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And If it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.”

– Mark Twain

IN CONCLUSION

It is said that we are the most productive for the first 5 hours of the day. So let’s make them count!

I challenge you to sit down and map out your ideal morning routine. Try it out, adjust where needed but just stick with it!

CONSISTENCY IS KEY!

Alyssa! I love all these tips. I too think it is so important to establish a daily routine in order to make the most of your day! Consistency is key and yes, we must eat the frog! Right! Thanks for sharing.

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jun 20

Thank you, Beth! Yes! The day gets so much easier once you get the hardest task out of the way.

  2. Maureen | 14th Jun 20

Alyssa! I love these tips! My hardest one to do on a consistent basis is “eat the frog”. I also include a 5 or 10 minute exercise routine! It helps to wake me up and gives me an energy boost!

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jun 20

Thanks, Maureen! I think we all struggle with that one sometimes. Starting is always the hardest part! Exercise is a great way to jumpstart your morning!

  3. Samantha Laycock | 15th Jun 20

Great tips. I love to journal and meditate in the morning. I’m working on getting breakfast in sooner too.

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jun 20

Thank you, Samantha! Journaling is the best! It’s one of my favorite things to do in the morning. It totally helps get me in the proper mindset for the day. I used to struggle with eating first thing in the morning, but I found that choosing savory breakfast foods really helps me eat earlier in the morning.

  4. Katelynn | 15th Jun 20

Love this!! So much motivation to be more productive in the morning! Can’t wait to start implementing this tomorrow 🙂

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jun 20

Thank you, Katelynn! I am so glad that you found this article helpful. 🙂

Love this advice! I feel the same way about the snooze button but I really need to work on a few of the others.

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jun 20

Thanks! That snooze button can be a major productivity killer! Everyone struggles with different things and that’s okay. We are human. 🙂

  6. jimmy clare | 15th Jun 20

    Great ideas thanks for sharing

  7. Courtney | 15th Jun 20

The screen is the hardest one for me. I always reach for it to check my overnight messages before I even roll out of bed!

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jun 20

To be honest, I still struggle with this one sometimes! It’s so hard to resist checking it first thing in the morning. I feel much better when I don’t though.

  8. Cathers | 15th Jun 20

I’m going to definitely do the ‘eat the frog’ point! Always best to get the worst task out of the way first!

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jun 20

Yes! I completely agree. You’ve got this! 🙂

  9. Nathalia | 15th Jun 20

Great reminders. I remind myself to do breathwork in the morning instead of grabbing my phone.

  11. Ttacy | 16th Jun 20

This is great. It makes me feel inspirrd to start the day.

  12. Lara | 16th Jun 20

Love this tips! I can’t wait to start introducing them to my morning routine. The first one tho is really difficult for me. I’m one of those people that has to hit snooze like 5 times before I can open my both eyes haha

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jun 20

Thanks, Lara! My husband is the same way. I will be out of bed and his alarm will go off at least five or six times before he gets up.

  13. Tanya | 16th Jun 20

Great tips! Eating the Frog is always one of my favorites. Get it out of the way and start the day already feeling accomplished!

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jun 20

Thanks, Tanya! “Eating the frog” is a great step to starting your day off right. I always feel better getting the most complicated tasks out of the way early on in my day.

  14. Cassie | 17th Jun 20

Great tips! Morning routines are so, so important. I also like your point about not hitting snooze. It’s such an easy trap to fall into.

  15. Kirsten Rosetti | 17th Jun 20

These are really good and completely doable tips. I’m not a morning person and it takes me a while to get started with my day. Currently my routine is: wake up, make coffee and drink it in bed while reading a novel (dangerous as I can get sucked in) or scrolling Instagram. Once I get going, I always to try to “eat a frog” – I usually decide what this is the night before. But making my bed is a hard one! I usually get around to doing it once I’ve been up a few hours. I’m going to try to change that.

  16. Nimalee Chandrasekara | 17th Jun 20

This is super perfect, Alyssa! I agreed to that meditating is a really good thing can do at morning and I love it more. Thank you for sharing!

  17. Katrina Crandall | 17th Jun 20

I had to laugh because your description of how you used to start your day sounds so familiar… waking up right before you have to get ready and rush to be somewhere! Yep! One thing I do well each day is having a good breakfast. One thing I need to improve on is that I do reach for my phone first thing. I’ll work on replacing that with a better habit!

  18. Ruthie | 17th Jun 20

This was really nice and inspiring. I absolutely agree with not starting the day using your phone and also starting the day with the hardest tasks. God bless!

  19. Cate | 17th Jun 20

Thank you for this! I know that when I have a set routine up wake up, it makes my day more focused and productive. I like your list of to-do’s and will give them a try.

  20. Diane | 17th Jun 20

Great Tips! I had no idea by the first one. Waking up once is always a struggle for me ..

  21. Tana | 17th Jun 20

As a morning person, I’m all about this article! Once I became a mom, I truly realized how essential it is to start the day off in a productive way. It really does set the rest of the day up for positivity and success. I’m definitely going to be thinking about your no-screen tip for first thing in the morning.

  22. Britt K | 18th Jun 20

Great tips. I find if I have a working ‘to-do’ list, I get MUCH more completed simply because I know what to work on next. There is no floundering trying to decide what to work on or what needs to be completed. For that reason, I’ve started finishing my work day out by creating a to-do list for the next day. That way it’s there and ready to roll when I get up in the morning.

  23. Amelia | 19th Jun 20

Haha eating the frog. That’s a great way to put it! I also make my bed every morning and I will say it definitely helps set the tone of the day

  24. Melisa | 19th Jun 20

Wonderful tips! I’m the worst at making my bed in the morning but I know how much value it adds to starting your day right! Just need to motivate myself to do it or eat the frog, I should say!

  25. Annie | 19th Jun 20

Making the bed is my favorite part of the morning! Grabbing my phone and checking email and social media first thing is my worst habit. Thanks for the ideas! 🙂

  26. Iva | 20th Jun 20

Love that checklist, I will definitely try ti listen to some motivational audio books in the morning.

  27. Rachel | 21st Jun 20

You and I must have been twins when we were younger because I felt like you were writing about me! Lol! These are great tips, thanks for sharing!

  28. Ashley | 25th Jun 20

These are fantastic tips, Alyssa! I love mornings and keeping a plan set for the day ahead helps keep me sane.

I’ve been browsing online more than three hours these days, but I by no means found
any interesting article like yours. It is lovely price enough for me.

Personally, if all site owners and bloggers made excellent content
material as you did, the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.

  30. Giada | 9th Nov 21

    Great tips!
What time do you wake up in the morning? 🙂

    • Lyssa day | 9th Nov 21

Thank you! I wake up every morning at 7 AM. What about you?
