Let’s be honest, the past two years have been pretty stressful and uncertain at best, and it’s starting to look like some of those problems will be carrying themselves into 2022 as well.

This is why I am declaring 2022 the year of self-care!

We all hear about how amazing self-care is and how we need to make more time for it in our daily lives, but what exactly is self-care, and how do we go about adding more of it to our busy routines?

Self-care can take a lot of forms. I simply define self-care as anything that makes me happy.

Some examples of self-care are,

  • Having a spa day
  • Taking a nap
  • Going for a walk
  • Meditating
  • Painting
  • Reading a good book

These are just a few examples, but you should get the general idea.

Of course, everyone’s ideal self-care activities might be different, so take some time to figure out what best refills your emotional/physical needs.

Sometimes figuring out what your ideal self-care routine is can be a bit tricky, which is why I have created a list for you to try!

So let’s dive in!

Self-care checklist for 2022
Self-care checklist

1. Get Ready For The Day

I know that this one seems simple and even silly to some, but I am DEAD serious when I tell you that this is a mental health game changer!

Trust me, I know how tempting it is to stay in your pajamas and unwashed messy hair on a day off, but getting ready does make a difference.

I work from home, so comfortable clothes are a must, which is why I opt for cute matching sweatsuits and maybe a somewhat styled messy bun.

I am not always on top of this one, but when I remember to put in an effort in the morning, my days feel so much better!

We don’t seem to realize it, but things like:

  • Brushing Our Teeth
  • Showering
  • Washing Our Hair
  • Putting On Clean Clothes
  • Taking Care Of Our Skin

These are all very important forms of self-care!

I definitely recommend trying this one out on the days you are stuck at home. It will make a huge difference, and it’s a fairly simple way to add a little more self-care into your routine.

2. Get Active

This one is possibly my favorite form of self-care.

I have always been a huge fan of getting my wiggles out, but even if you aren’t someone who enjoys physical activity, you can still find activities that will get your body moving and make you feel good!

Physical activity has so many physical health benefits but did you know that it can also help with your mental health?

Physical activity can aid in alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Activities like:

  • Yoga
  • Swimming
  • Going For A Short Walk
  • Dancing
  • Hiking
  • Weightlifting
  • Biking
  • Rock Climbing
  • Running
  • Tennis

Just to name a few. I personally like to mix up my activities to keep myself engaged and more active.

Yoga is probably my go-to activity when I am not feeling like getting up and moving, and it always leaves my body feeling SO much better.

So, find what works for you but most importantly, find time to move your body!

Your body will thank you for it.

3. Get Outside

Finding time to go outside and be in nature is a quick and easy way to get in a little extra self-care. Find some time to soak up the sun, even if it’s only for five or ten minutes a day.

Getting some much-needed sunshine aids in our body’s production of Vitamin D. This is important because vitamin D helps our bodies with things like,

  • Healthy Bones
  • Lower Blood Pressure
  • Better Mental Health
  • Lower Risk Of Disease

All I am seeing are benefits here!

Also, getting outside is a great thing to pare with getting active. So many activities can be done outdoors, and then you have just crossed two of these items off of your self-care checklist!

4. Do Something You Enjoy

Yoga self care
Self Care Practice

Doing something you enjoy can take so many different forms and can be unique to each individual.

Some examples of doing what you enjoy might include:

  • Picking up an old hobby you enjoy
  • Watching a movie or tv show you love
  • Going for a scenic hike
  • Reading a good book on a rainy day
  • Finding time to do something creative like paint, sculpt, or build something

Life is stressful, and we could all use more time doing something we love.

5. Practice Positive Self-Talk

I’ll admit that positive self-talk has been a bit of a struggle for me in the past and is something I am working on daily.

We often don’t realize how detrimental those negative things we tell ourselves are to our mental well-being. When we tell ourselves we can’t do something or that we are not good enough to do something, those slowly become our truths.

It’s sad, but so many of us unknowingly hold ourselves back by using negative self-talk.

So how do we stop?

I personally force myself to come up with three positive things about myself for every negative thing I think. I won’t lie, it’s annoying, but it has worked for me!

Another way you can implement more positive self-talk is by practicing positive affirmations each day.

An example of positive affirmations would be:

  • I am strong and capable
  • I am good at what I do
  • I am where I am supposed to be
  • I attract happiness and wealth into my life
  • I can overcome my greatest fears
  • I am in charge of my own life
  • I will not compare myself to strangers on the internet
  • I have the power to create change

Meditation or manifestation is another excellent way to shift to a more positive mindset!

Whatever method you choose, be kind and patient with yourself; you are doing your best.

6. Practice Gratitude

I know that this one sounds a bit silly, but it really does affect our mental health and is 100% a form of self-care.

When we give thanks for what we do have, we spend less time focusing on the things we don’t. Gratitude helps remove ourselves from that disparity mindset

To practice Gratitude, you can try making a list of the things you are grateful for each day or simply saying them out loud. I personally like to say mine out loud with my positive affirmations each morning.

7. Set Attainable Goals

Setting and accomplishing attainable goals can help us feel accomplished and excited about life. Setting monthly, weekly, or even daily goals can allow us to feel on top of our tasks and pride in our accomplishments.

Short-term goals are a great way to feel accomplished and boost or mental well-being.

Be sure to read my article, The Guide To Creating Short Term Goals, for a more detailed guide on setting short-term goals.

8. Get Enough Rest

You have probably heard this one a million times, but that is only because it is true! Sleep directly affects our physical and mental health in so many ways.

When life gets hectic and children are in play, I know that this step can be challenging to accomplish.

My advice would be to prioritize sleep when you can, take naps when you are able, and go to sleep early instead of staying up scrolling on your phone.

9. Fuel Your Body With Nourishing Food

This is another self-care item that makes a huge difference in your physical and mental well-being.

What we fuel our bodies with defines how we will feel during our days and how much energy we will have to accomplish our goals.

Some great food options to add to your diet would be:

  • Leafy Greens
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Beans
  • Avocados
  • Tomatoes
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Oranges
  • Grapefruit
  • Grapes

You get the idea; basically adding more produce to your daily meals should aid you in feeling better mentally and physically.

10. Read A Book

Reading a book is a form of self care
Read A Good Book

Books are a fantastic way to escape the pressures and stress of daily life, if only for a moment. Plus, if you are into self-help books, they are a great way to learn and grow as a person.

If you find you are a little too busy to read, you can always opt for an audiobook!

10 Best Self-Help Books For Reaching Your Goals

11. Make Time For Social Interactions

Sometimes we don’t even realize how much we have isolated ourselves from others until we take a second to reach out and socialize with those we care about.

Socializing can take many forms, going out, a friendly phone call, a funny string of text messages. So if you are thinking about reaching out to a friend or family member, just do it.

As human beings, we all need a little social interaction from time to time, and filling that social cup can go a long way in maintaining our mental health.

12. Take In Inspiring Media

Inspiring media can be anything from a good book to what we view on the internet. When we take in things that make us happy rather than anxious or stressed, we feel better.

If the news is a source of stress, turn it off. If FB has you down, stop scrolling and instead switch to something more happy and enjoyable.

Other forms of inspiring media might include:

  • Audiobooks
  • Books
  • Movies
  • Podcasts
  • Music
  • Videos
  • Blog Posts

You get the idea. Find what inspires you and participate in more of it each day.

13. Learn To Say No

Learn to stop allowing others to pile more onto your already overflowing plate. Instead, say no when you need to. You don’t owe others your health, and if done kindly, people will definitely understand that you need to prioritize yourself.

Setting these kinds of boundaries can be challenging but SO worth it!

14. Declutter Your Space

Sometimes living in a cluttered space can aid in feelings of anxiety or depression, and a quick tidying can relieve some of those feelings.

Often the state of one’s home directly correlates to one’s current mental health.

I know this is certainly the case for myself. This is why I have a setlist of chores I MUST accomplish each day even when I’m not feeling like it, just to keep on top of the basics.

Start small. Tidy a single room, maybe the room you spend the most time in, and see how good it makes you feel!

15. Do Something Creative

This is probably the one I enjoy the most. Creating something is a fantastic way to feel excited and rejuvenated!

“Doing something creative” can really be a lot of things. Things like:

  • Painting
  • Sculpting
  • Filming
  • Woodworking
  • Graphic Design
  • Dancing
  • Writing
  • Singing
  • Practice An Instrument

Whatever you can think of that leaves yourself with an empowered feeling toward the thing you have created, whether that be a sound, piece of art, or text on a page.

There are so many different mediums on which we can create. So get creative and find what creative thing brings you the most joy.

It might seem odd but creating something is an excellent and fun form of self-care. Creating is honestly my go-to self-care task when I am feeling worn down.

This is a brilliant list… I have a piano that I’ve been meaning to learn for two years. I’m going to get creative and get started!

    • Lyssa day | 12th Jan 22

Thank you, Amanda! Piano is a fantastic way to get in touch with your creative side and is a great form of self-care! 🙂

  2. Jeannie | 12th Jan 22

Such a great self-care list, shower everyday is so important for me

    • Lyssa day | 12th Jan 22

Thank you, Jeanie! Showering/getting ready for the day is a big one for me too. Sometimes I will shower and then slip right back into Pj’s to work. I’m working on it haha.

  3. Deanna | Life By Deanna | 12th Jan 22

These are great self care ideas!! Movement is a big self care item for me so I try to add it to my mornings since mornings = anxiety for me!

    • Lyssa day | 13th Jan 22

Thank you, Deana! Yes! Mornings can be so hard and I definitely find that exercise in the morning helps keep me calm and focused on my day.

  4. Leah Stevenson | 12th Jan 22

I always forget to do more self-care activities for myself. One of the things I would like to do though is giving myself a spa day but my bathtub is too short to try a bath bomb lol. For now, I think I’ll learn and practice a musical instrument.

    • Lyssa day | 13th Jan 22

Self-Care is definitely something we could all use a reminder about. I am sorry about your short bathtub! Instruments sound pretty good too!

  5. Cindy Mom the Lunch Lady | 12th Jan 22

Thank you so much for the self care reminder. During the pandemic since I wasn’t working it was so easier to practice self care, but since returning to work, I often struggle with finding time to practice things I was doing while not working. I need to start again, even if just one thing per day.

    • Lyssa day | 13th Jan 22

Thank you, Cindy! Yes! Even just one little thing a day can help us out so much even when we are busy! I think that’s a great goal to have. 🙂

  6. Shar | 13th Jan 22

This self-care topic is of top importance, even more now than ever. I support the points you listed. I feel my best by eating lots of veggies, drinking enough water daily, working on my goals, meditating, and walking in nature.

    • Lyssa day | 13th Jan 22

Thank you, Shar! I am so glad that you agree. It’s amazing how much our physical health is tied to our mental wellbeing.

That’s a great article. I can’t agree more. Self care is so important. I just started doing something completely new (pole dancing classes) and it is so amazing to do something for yourself.

    • Lyssa day | 13th Jan 22

Thank you, Natalia! Pole dancing classes sound like so much fun! I have actually looked into these but they don’t offer them in my area. I hope you have a blast! 🙂

I love taking naps. I take naps almost everyday. Its a moment where I just step away from everything and just relax for a few minutes. Great tips for self care.

    • Lyssa day | 13th Jan 22

Thank you! Naps are also a favorite of mine. I love the feeling of being able to keep my energy up the rest of the day from just a 30-minute power nap.

  12. Ashley | 13th Jan 22

I love your checklist, Alyssa! It has been a tough couple of years, and I am very much working on my mindset and overall health this year. Practicing gratitude has been a huge help to me, and I completely agree with you on getting dressed for the day. It makes such a difference to me because when I’m in my cozy pajamas, I just want to stay cozy and not do anything, haha.

I hope you have an amazing rest of your week!

    • Lyssa day | 13th Jan 22

Thank you, Ashley! It really has been such a hard few years for everyone and I am hopeful that we can make this year a good one. I am so glad I am not alone with the not wanting to get ready for the day thing haha.

  13. Nishtha | 13th Jan 22

Love this! Grady ideas? I need to steal from this list:) I make sure to take a nap when I can and exercise.

    • Lyssa day | 13th Jan 22

Thanks! Steal away! Napping and exercise are great forms of self-care. 🙂

  14. Tina | 13th Jan 22

Definitely taking notes on all these. My first priority this year would be taking care of myself because I fell short on that last year. I am so happy I came across this article. Thank you for the tips! x

    • Lyssa day | 13th Jan 22

Thank you, Tina! I think we all need a little more self-care. Last year was also a struggle for me but I’m excited to get back on the self-care wagon. I wish you all the best with your self-care journey! 🙂

  15. Mihaela | https://theworldisanoyster.com/ | 14th Jan 22

It’s mid-January already, and haven’t managed to start a swimming routine I was thinking about for a while now. I still hope to get started this Sunday. I love your reminders and the planners – visuals are always helpful!

Thank you, Keli! I am so glad! Positive self-talk has been a huge one for me. I hope it goes well for you. 🙂

  17. Rachel | 14th Jan 22

I truly believe that we can’t take care of other people unless we take care of ourselves first. You’ve made some great points here.

    • Lyssa day | 14th Jan 22

Thanks, Rachel! It’s so true! You can’t pour from an empty cup!

  18. Yesenia | 14th Jan 22

Glad I found this post as my new year resolution this year is to incorporate more self care. As a working mom, it’s so easy to deprioritize yourself! I especially want to focus on decluttering my space and practicing gratitude from the checklist, I think even those two make a world of difference!

    • Lyssa day | 14th Jan 22

I am so glad that you found my blog post helpful! You are so right! Even just practicing one or two items from this list can make a world of difference in terms of self-care, especially for busy mommas! 🙂

  19. Adriane | 15th Jan 22

Great tips! It is so easy to get wrapped up in everything the kids need and forget to take care of ourselves.

  20. Adventure Awaits Us at Home | 16th Jan 22

Thank you for these reminders! I can relate to all of these. But the one that sticks out as number one for me is your first tip. I have worked from home for many years. However, it wasn’t until the shut down in 2020 that I stopped getting myself ready each day. That lasted about a month and then I just couldn’t take my mood anymore. It was amazing how much of a difference it made to at least put some effort into it. I need to work on most of these though.

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jan 22

I am glad to know that I am not the only one. 2020 was really hard for me in so many ways, especially in the self-care department. It is crazy how much of a differnce getting ready for the day makes! I find that not only do I feel better, but I am far more productive.

  21. Gallivanting Guides | 16th Jan 22

This is a great list and the checklist will be very helpful!!? Thanks for sharing!!

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jan 22

Thank you! I am so glad that you found it helpful. 🙂

  22. Jenn | 17th Jan 22

These are all great ideas – I recently did a spa day, and boy, did I feel energized and rejuvenated afterwards! Thanks for making this handy list.

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jan 22

Thank you, Jen! I love a good spa day! It’s crazy how something so simple can have such a major impact on our lives!

  23. Nancy Horn | 17th Jan 22

I could totally use some self care! I would put napping on the top of my list as Covid has made me so exhausted! I need to do more of this in 2022.

    • Lyssa day | 17th Jan 22

Yes! Napping is my favorite form of self-care! Its so easy and leaves you feeling a little more energetic to reach the rest of your goals for the day.

  24. Scatchy | 19th Jan 22

The last two years are hectic, busy and they are lacking social fun. We are in strange times and I’m regularly forgetting to take care of myself. Especially because I’m working from home I just let it slip to the point that I feel like a robot. Thanks for reminding me what is really important. 🙂

    • Lyssa day | 19th Jan 22

I seriously can relate. The past two years have certainly been me living in survival mode. I hope 2022 is better for you and you find time for yourself. 🙂

  25. Paul | 19th Jan 22

You’ve provided a practice list of excellent self-care ideas. It reminds me that Maybe I’ve been isolating a bit too much and that I need to work on my self-talk. I practice gratitude every day and have picked up a few new hobbies over the last two years. Thank you.

    • Lyssa day | 19th Jan 22

Thank you, Paul! I am so glad that you found my self-care list helpful. I think we all have been a bit isolated the past two years and are all struggling a bit in the self-care department as a result. I hope your 2022 is great and that you get enough time to continue with your new hobbies. 🙂

  26. LaShae Stewart | 19th Jan 22

As a mama to a toddler and soon-to-be little boy in March, self-care is usually the last thing on my list for the day. But I love your suggestions and that they are very simple, easy, attainable, every-day type goals!

    • Lyssa day | 19th Jan 22

Thank you, LaShae! I tried to make the list as easy to follow because I know so many of us are busy and don’t have a ton of time to spend on ourselves.

  27. Jen @ JENRON DESIGNS | 19th Jan 22

Such a great list to remember how to take care of ourselves, and way to to add in small way to do so.

    • Lyssa day | 20th Jan 22

Thank you, Jen! I am glad you enjoyed the read.

  28. Kaybee Lives | 19th Jan 22

This is such a helpful checklist! I love that this is more of a framework rather than defining self-care with rigid rules. Getting outside can look like anything from sitting on the porch, to yoga, to taking a walk, or running a marathon. You do you!

    • Lyssa day | 20th Jan 22

Thank you, Kaybee! Yes! Self-care comes in SO many forms and we just have to find what works best for us! 🙂

  29. The Confused Twenty Something | 20th Jan 22

Thanks! That’s an awesome form of self-care!

  36. Mihaela | 29th Jan 22

Going through your list, I see that I started to implement some of the ideas last year – the craziest of this pandemic for me. Still looking into positive talking and yoga, less caffeine and more water!

    • Lyssa day | 29th Jan 22

Those are awesome goals! Way to get back to it after a hectic year! 🙂

  37. Scott Harrison Rees | 29th Jan 22

Brilliant list, Lyssa!! I am, of course, a huge proponent for naps. But really, I cannot underscore the importance of being active, so I am glad you mentioned it. Back when I was dealing with severe depression, my dog forced me to get out every day. It made such a huge difference. Keep up the good work!

    • Lyssa day | 31st Jan 22

Thank you, Scott! Yes! Staying active is key especially when you work from home. I am so glad that you have a furry friend to help motivate you to get out and move. My husband and I try to go hiking every weekend just to get out and it makes all the difference.

  38. Jeny | 31st Jan 22

Great post. This was helpful. I was feeling down from yesterday and I didn’t knew what to do. This post was exactly what I was looking for. Have a great day.

    • Lyssa day | 1st Feb 22

I am so glad that I could help! 🙂

  39. Michele Hunsinger | 4th Feb 22

I love “Learn to say no”. I’m not good with that, but I’ll learn eventually, lol.

    • Lyssa day | 4th Feb 22

Same! I have definitely gotten better at telling others no over the years.

  40. Maria Khan | 7th Feb 22

Fantastic post! when I am stuck in bad feelings I don,t know what I do. This article is very helpful for me

  41. Nthabiseng | 21st Feb 22

Great self-care list. I love some sunshine and learning to say no more.

  42. Ayesha Ayub | 22nd Feb 22

I do 100% agree with your each and every point. Ups and downs are part of everyone life in down time we just learn to chin up, take care of self and move through situation (no matter with baby steps). For me taking shower, dressing up, getting some sunshine and good sleep proves really helpful.

  43. Deirdre | 28th Mar 22

I totally agree with these self care tips! Many of these make me feel a lot better when I’m having a rough mental health day. Thanks!
